July 21st, 2005

Wawa, up around Lake Superior, past Thunder Bay and on into Western Ontario, a sleep and then on through Manitoba and on to Regina, Saskatchewan.

What an amazingly gorgeous country! We took off late from Wawa, Ontario and headed up around the eastern shores of Lake Superior (is there a Lake Posterior?). Stopped for a few hours at a rivermouth and went for a hike to find wild blueberries. Feeling full of lunch (and a few tiny blueberries), we took off for Thunder Bay where my Dad and Brother Joe and I stopped in during my sixteenth summer. Trippy that that was 25 years ago,... Somewhat cranky and hungry we pulled into Thunder Bay and found it to be a pretty cool little community. Very hippy dippy with organic restaraunts and holistic healing centers ("Centres",.. sorry). Found a good place called the Mad House and ate a yummy dinner.

Headed out again and made a rather frightening trip though "Moose Country" where every five kilometers or so there was a big ass sign warning of the dangers of moose on the road at night. I spent two hours behind the feeble headlights of our van peering out into the inky blackness, trying to discern the shape of a fourteen hundred pound moose in the road.

Finally stopped for the night in Dryden, Ontario at a nice little motel on the side of the Trans-Canada Hyway and promptly passed out.

Woke up this morning and headed out early. Drove, and drove, and drove.... Made it through the final part of Ontario, all the way through Manitoba, and into the middle of Saskatchewan. Saskatchewan is flat like a lake. Really. Like ocean horizon flat. They also have mosquitos the size of sparrows. Delightful place so far. What I understand from the locals is that there's a guy here named "Dick Assman",.. he was invited onto the Letterman show... Dick Assman from Regina....

The Pics:

One from the day before,... Kenna is showing a lot of interest in the photo stuff I do. Pretty cool..

Deb makes some yummies for us at a road side stop on the top of lake superior.

Found a cool waterfall on our hike.

Great trail,.. reminded us of the walk in New Zealand.

Deb stole my camera and nabbed me by the waterfall...

Waterfall from the top...

An unfortunate bear,.. I understand from the locals that this is a regular occurance.. shame.

Lakes everywhere up here. Seriously a million lakes.

Gas is REALLY expensive here,.. those are Liters on the bottom,.. not gallons.

These little bastards are EVERYWHERE,... we look like we've got chicken pox. Deb mashed this one against the window. BWAHAHAHAHA!

Happened upon the UC Berkley Engineering project in the middle of Saskatchewan,...

Deb and I have been trading off reading Harry Potter to the kids... the suspense has been awful,... what's going to happen to Dumbledore!!??

Kaya pointed out that the bug splotches on the van were getting to a really icky level,... I took a picture.

Speaking of bugs,... this is this evenings photoProwl around the hotel in Regina,... Time lapse of the bugs in the lights.
